Phil hosted the 2002 draft in Congleton again, the first one to be run with the aid of a lap-top computer to avoid the commissioner being swamped with paper. Steve Reeder was again fighting his own personal war somewhere in the world so Clive Williams was employed as his General Manager, and got suitably stitched up by a fake phone call after the draft. The highlight was the other 11 owners running a sweepstake on which retired player Gary Botteley would draft. Never have the Truckers' picks been so eagerly awaited.
